The Episcopal Church of Sudan

A Statement from Bishop David Stancliffe of Salisbury, UK on the current situation in Sudan

I am extremely distressed and concerned to hear of the attacks by the so-called ‘Lord’s Resistance Army’ and others on unarmed civilians in the dioceses of Mundri, Ezo, Maridi, Ibba and now Lui over the past week. A significant number have died, villages burned and many displaced.

The diocesan Sudan Link Committee is doing all it can to ascertain in a confused situation what has happened and where, what help is needed and whether we can provide it.

I referred only last Friday in a press statement to the potential destabilization of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement by the movement of the LRA into the Sudan from the Congo, and I will support a tabled question in the House of Lords next month intended to encourage more vigorous support of the CPA by HM Government.

In the meantime I appeal for prayers for the whole of Sudan and its people, but most especially at this time for our friends Bishops Bismark Avokaya of Mundri, John Zawo of Ezo, Justin Arama of Maridi, Wilson Kamani of Ibba and Bullen Dolli of Lui – and for the clergy and people in their care.
