Using MS Outlook

A dedicated mail program on your own computer is the better way to read, store and access your emails.  It takes a bit more work to set it up – but then those settings are stored and you do not need to keep typing them in!

The basic information that you need for any email browser is as follows:

  • POP3 (Incoming) mail host: gabriel.vm.bytemark.co.uk
(this is the name of the computer that stores all of your mail)

  • SMTP (Outgoing) mail host: gabriel.vm.bytemark.co.uk
(this is the name of the computer through which you can send your mail.  In this case, it happens to be the same one as the POP3 server.)

  • User Name: [postholder]@[diocese].anglican.org
(that should be your full email address)

  • Password: as was given to you

It is important that the computer that receives your outgoing mail knows who you are.  (This is one major reason for the lack of security in a Yahoo mail address.) When you set up the SMTP connection, you will need to tell it your user name and password.
When you set up Outlook to read this mail box, you will need to add the information given above to the appropriate boxes.

Other versions of Outlook and other programs will work in slightly different ways, but the following should give you the basic system for setting it up
Tools Menu Click on Tools then Email Accounts…

New Account

Select Add a new email account then click Next

Server TypeYou are now asked what type of server. Select POP3 as your server type then click Next. This takes you to the main settings box, shown below.

 Email Settings

Your Name”, can be any name that you like to use – it could be “Provincial Secretary” or “Bishop George – or whatever you choose.  This will be added to your email in the “From: ” so that people can see who sent the mail.
Your Email Address and your User Name are identical: [postholder]@[diocese].anglican.org
The password is exactly as you have been given.  CaPital letters do make a difference!
Incoming and outgoing servers are both gabriel.vm.bytemark.co.uk

Click on “More Settings…
SMTP authorisationFirst select the “General” tab at the top (it is probably already selected anyway) and type in a convenient name so that you can recognise it.  This is not shown to anyone else – just on your computer.

Now select the Outgoing Server tab at the top of the box that shows.  Click to place a tick in the top square box (“My outgoing server requires authentication”) and then select “Use the same settings as my incoming mail server".

This informs the server that you are genuine!  Click on OK – and everything should be set up.

Test the system by clicking the button (“Test Account Settings…”) and then click Next and Finish to close the configuration system. All should now be ready.
